Topical Melatonin: Protective Effects Against UV Radiation
Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. Melatonin is a hormone that is normally made by the body. Levels of melatonin in the body can decline due to lifestyle, so fortunately melatonin supplements are available. Melatonin acts directly as an antioxidant, and indirectly by causing a DNA stabilizing effect. Research indicates that when melatonin is applied topically, it can protect against sunburn and UVR-induced damage to cellular structures and pathways. Treatment of the skin 15 minutes before sun exposure has been shown to almost completely suppress the development of UV-induced skin redness. Topical melatonin can be compounded by prescription.
